Ahh, what a nice Saturday! Time for another Protein Powder review. This time I am going to be reviewing a gainer type protein powder. A gainer has multiple sources of protein along with a lot of calories, high quality fats and carbs. The gainer would typically be used when trying to bulk up or as a meal replacement. The powder up for review today is Bio-Engineered Supplements and Nutrition or BSN’s True-Mass.
Starting with the exterior appearance BSN always seems to do a very good job with providing a futuristic looking container, something I find very cool. This is a big container (5.75 lbs) and has all the necessary literature on the label. The directions and nutrition are laid out very nicely. With the serving size being 145 grams you get about 48 grams of protein, 16 grams of fat and 66 grams of carbs. So I would give the pre taste appearance a 10 out of 10.
Now its time to go ahead and open it up and check out the contents. This tub of powder is sealed, a must for any supplement especially protein powder. With the seal off I see the scoop right on top, I got lucky and don’t have to dig for it. As I have mentioned before I hate a container with a lot of empty space, this one is full. One thing I don’t like is that the size of the scoop is small, it takes 3 scoops to equal one serving size. A bigger scoop would be nice. , I give it a 7/10 for inside container visual.
Now to the mixing, some people say this is the most important feature of a protein powder. The serving size listed is 145 grams, which is 3 scoops. So I go ahead and put my 3 scoops into my shaker cup that I have filled with 16 oz of cold water. I put the top on and start shaking and it seems to have mixed after about 10-15 seconds. I am going to my pour test to make sure there are no clumps, poured it into the glass with no clumps . I want to try mixing the scoops with spoon in a glass now. I have a feeling that this isn’t going to work so well but its part of the review. So I dump the scoops of powder in with the 16 ounces of water and I start to stir. Well after mixing and mixing it seems that I am unable to get out all of the clumps. So the preferred method of mixing for BSN True-Mass would be with a shaker bottle. So for the mixing part of the review I give it an 8/10.
As I’ve said before, the taste test is the part of the review that separates the men from the boys. Taste is a very big concern of mine, if I get a 5lb container of protein powder I want to make sure its something I enjoy drinking. Well the flavor I have today is “Strawberry Milkshake”. I have found that strawberry flavored powders are hit or miss, we’ll see. I am going to just try the scoops I mixed with the shaker cup, I am not a big fan of clumps. (Big ol’ Sip) Wow, very good! Taste just like a strawberry milkshake to me. Well I have to give the taste test a 9/10.
I have to say, I was very pleased with this powder and enjoyed it very much. The taste and consistency were a real treat, something that can be hard to find in the gainer powders. Although it did have a couple of things I had issues with its not enough of a problem for me to stay away from the powder. The Freak likes!
Overall score is a 8.5 out of 10
