Protein Powder Review- ON Gold Standerd 100% Whey

I am going to start off on my first review starting with one of the more popular powders, Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard 100% Whey.

Starting with the exterior appearance ON has done a very good job in making a clear and practical label design with easy to read information and directions. The nutrition facts, to me, are right where I think they should be. With the serving size being 31 grams you get about 24 grams of protein, 1 gram of fat and 4 grams of carbs(1 gram sugar). So I would give the pre taste appearance a 9 out of 10.

Next I am going to go ahead  open it up and see how it looks. The tub of powder is sealed very nicely *warning* stay away from powders that do not have a professional style seal! So I have it open and adjust the powder a bit by turning the tub and I find the scoop, the scoop is another must for me. Another thing, I hate it when you open a container of protein powder and there is a lot of empty space in the container, that is not the case with ON gold standard whey. The container is really filled up, but not so much it makes a mess when you go to get a scoop of the powder. So I am very pleased so far with my experience, I give it a 9/10 for inside container visual.

Now to the mixing, some people say this is the most important feature of a protein powder. I’m reading the serving size and it says 31 grams or one rounded scoop, one rounded scoop?! That can be a little hard to judge. So I go ahead and get my “rounded” scoop and decide to mix it with 6 ounces of water in my shaker cup. I shake for about 10 seconds and I see no visual clumps or powder stuck to the sides. Just to make sure of no clumps I pour it into a glass, still I see no clumps(big plus). I want to try mixing a scoop with spoon in a glass now. This is the test that most powders fail, we’ll see what happens. So I dump the scoop of powder in with the 6 ounces of water and I start to stir, about 10 seconds. From what I can see it mixed very well, no visual clumps. So for the mixing part of the review I give it an 8/10.

Now for the taste test, the part of the review that separates the men from the boys. Taste is a very big concern of mine, if I get a 5lb container of protein powder I want to make sure its something I enjoy drinking. Well the flavor I have today is “Double Rich Chocolate”, I am very particular about how my chocolate taste :0). I’ll start by tasting the scoop I used the shaker cup to mix. Well I have to say, very good! The consistency is very smooth and the taste is very close to that of my favorite type of ice cream. There are no clumps or unmixed powder. On to the stirred scoop. The stirred one is also very smooth and no clumps. Well I have to give the taste test a 10/10.

In closing this powder sets the bar high, it’s all around a very good protein powder and I can see why it’s so popular.

Overall score is a 9 out of 10
